We’re getting married at Rockwood Manor, the former national headquarters of
the Girl Scouts. In keeping with the venue’s history, we’re planning a casual,
summer camp-esque celebration. But here’s a basic survival kit.
Where should I stay?
At Rockwood! We will be staying on the property Friday and Saturday nights and would love you to join us (for free) either or both nights. Rockwood has bunk-style cabins with heat, air-conditioning and indoor plumbing. Cabin rooms sleep 4, 10, or 14 each, accommodating 50 total. Note on the RSVP if you would like to reserve a spot. (And feel free to contact us if you have questions like, “What about my hair dryer?”) In-towners are welcome, too.
Hate cabins? We’ve reserved a block of rooms at the
Marriott Bethesda Suites, a 20-minute drive to Rockwood. The two-room suites are
$109 a night and sleep four. Call 800-228-9290 before August 29, and say you’re part of the Cox/Hesse
Wedding group staying at the Bethesda Suites.
Rockwood Manor is located 25 minutes outside of Washington, DC, at
11001 MacArthur Blvd, Potomac, MD.
Airport information and driving directions from points in DC, MD,
and VA are on this website and you contact us at monicaandrob@yahoo.com or phone us at 202-374-9602.
The closest Metro (Washington's subway) stop to Rockwood
is Rockville,
on the red line. Metro's website is www.wmata.com.
The station is still about a 20-minute drive from Rockwood.
We can pick you up if you let us know in advance. Metro is a good option
if you plan on staying at Rockwood all weekend. If you're interested in side trips,
we recommend a car.
What should I bring?
If you stay in the cabins, bring a bath towel, sheets/sleeping bag—
the beds do not come with linens—and a book you’ve been meaning to read.
There’s no cable or WiFi at Rockwood.
No matter where you stay, bring sunscreen and shoes that work on
grass. The ceremony will be outdoors (think sundresses and khakis),
as will many of the activities we have planned.
And a music instrument.
Activities, you say?
Yes! We’re still working out the details, but here’s a rough sketch:
| Friday |
7 pm (ish) |
After our rehearsal, Bob and Marylyn
(Rob’s parents) will host a hot dog (or veggie dog) and marshmallow roast. Join us! |
| Saturday |
9-11 am |
Dawn, Monica’s mom, will cook brunch for anyone who’s around to eat it. |
| |
11-2:30 pm |
Campfire Wedding Tournament, led by camp counselor Doug (Monica’s dad).
Think egg tosses and other camp favorites. If you want to participate in the
tournament but are not staying at Rockwood, worry not: we’ll have place
for you to change your clothes.
If you’re not into food or games, Friday evening and Saturday morning would
be good times to see the sites (see below).
|
| |
4 pm |
Wedding!
The ceremony will be followed by a reception, to include eating, dancing, and general hanging out. Bring any musical instruments you can play.
|
| |
10 pm (ish) |
Some people will still be dancing. If you need downtime, we’ll be showing movies. Popcorn and munchies will be provided for late-night snackers. |
| Sunday |
10 am |
Up and at ’em to check out of Rockwood. |
I think those activities sound dumb.
No problem. Rockwood is close to lots of tourist attractions. Great Falls,
a national park with beautiful hiking trails, has an entrance just a few
miles away. Or, head into D.C to visit the Smithsonian museums, take a boat
tour of the monuments, or go shopping in Georgetown. More info is in
the Stuff to Do Section.
We can’t wait to see you in September.
